H1N1 Flu -- Background1

The outbreak of H1N1 flu (also known as swine flu), a contagious respiratory disease, continues in the U.S. and internationally. State and local jurisdictions, including the City of Alexandria, are prepared and have medicine on hand to treat the flu, if needed.

It is important for residents and visitors to be informed and be prepared. The Virginia Department of Health urges residents to learn more about H1N1 flu and how to prevent it. There are everyday actions you can take to stay healthy:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it, and immediately wash your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Get vaccinated.

If you feel sick, take these steps to prevent making others sick:

  • Stay at home, and stay away from others.
  • Call your doctor before you go to work or school. In case you have the flu, this will help them take steps to prevent its spread to others.

If you or a loved one gets sick:

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Consider taking fever-reducing medication. Do not give asprin to children or teen who have the flu.
  • Antiviral medication may be prescribed for those at risk for serious problems from the flu.
  • Get medical attention fast for troubles breathing, seizures, or confusion.
