Building Better Futures

Tutoring

Building Better Futures offers after-school academic enrichment in core subject areas and elective materials. Students participate in one-on-one tutoring in the T.C. Williams library. Standards of Learning are reinforced with mandatory attendance at the school’s SOL reviews sessions. Members of the National Honor Society tutor the students, as do adult volunteers from the Institute of Defense Analyses and community volunteers. In addition to improved academic performance, program participants achieve marked improvements in student behavior, attendance, and attitudes towards school.  Additionally, peer tutoring increases self-esteem, affiliation with school, and sense of belonging. Two Building Better Futures students recently showed such a significant improvement in their academic performance that they qualified for National Honor Society and now participate in the program as tutors.
