The Campagna Center Volunteer Opportunities

All of The Campagna Center's program offer volunteer opportunities. Examples of current volunteer opportunities include:

  • Book Buddies: Book Buddies is an after-school program designed to encourage children to increase their literacy skills and develop and love of reading. Volunteers work one-on-one with a first- through fifth-grade student, assisting them with their reading and writing skills. The Book Club is offered at two elementary schools in the city of Alexandria to children attending the Campagna Kids program. One session is offered every Wednesday at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School, and the second session is offered every Thursday at Charles Barrett Elementary School. Both sessions take place once/week for one hour/week, from 4:00 until 5:00 pm. Campagna staff is on site for guidance and supervision.
  • Reach Out and Read Waiting Room Reader: Reach Out and Read is a national pediatric literacy program that encourages parents to read to their children at an early age. The Campagna Center sends volunteers to read to children and their parents in the waiting room of the Alexandria Health Department's Children's Clinic.
  • Building Better Futures Tutor: Volunteer tutors are needed to help high school students succeed academically by assisting with homework, as well as teaching organizational and time-management skills.

Tutoring occurs on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30 until 5:00 pm at Minnie Howard and T.C. Williams campuses. Tutors only need to commit to volunteering for one day and meet consistently with their student on the same day every week.

Tutors meet with BBF staff and classroom teachers to discuss the students's academic progress. Tutors also help high school students with the college application process.
  • Building Better Futures Mentor: Volunteer mentors serve as positive adult role models to high school students, and provide vital friendship, support, and guidance as students adjust to the school environment. Typical mentoring activities include having lunch together, spending time outdoors, and exploring the city.
