Students in Building Better Futures (BBF), The Campagna Center's mentoring and support program for at-risk ESL students at T.C. Williams High School, have been busy helping themselves succeed.
March 27 - BBF members of the Influence Club launched the 19th Annual Kick Butts Day, an annual celebration of youth leadership and activism in the fight against tobacco. After taking part in a press conference alongside Alexandria Mayor William Euille and Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook, they took to local stores and performed an audit of tobacco products, beer, and wine, Alcopops, and caffeinated malt beverages. Club members noted ads and displays for these products, as well as the location of ads and items in proximity to candy counters. Read more about the members' role in educating the community about the tobacco industry's marketing practices on page 16 of the Alexandria Gazette Packet.
April 10 - Bezawit Mekonnen, senior at T.C. Williams and active member of BBF since the 9th grade, became the first recipient of the Achieving The Dream Scholarship. The newly-created scholarship from the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria --$10,000 per year towards a four-year college degree--is largest the organization awards during the year. The scholarship is given to a student demonstrating "exceptional academic ability and determination to succeed." Despite coming from Ethiopia just five years ago, Ms. Mekonnen is a top-ranked student, taking honors courses and volunteering for many activities. Congratulations, Bezawit! May 4 - The Titan Expo, a spring fair benefiting the Larry Trice PTSA/SCA Scholarships for vocational student graduates from T.C. Williams High School, received volunteer support from long-time BBF students. BBF sponsored the Chicken Toss game, raising about $100 for the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. See pictures of the game in the Alexandria Gazette Packet!
May 16 - BBF students actively participated in Decision Day, an event at T.C. Williams High School highlighting the college plans of seniors and generating excitement about postsecondary choices for underclassmen.
