ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Campagna Center is pleased to announce that Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead will serve as the Grand Marshal for The Campagna Center’s 40th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade. The Parade—presented by The Campagna Center, the St. Andrew’s Society, and the City of Alexandria, in Partnership with The Scottish Government—will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 in Old Town Alexandria.
"It is a huge privilege to be invited to act as Grand Marshal at the 40th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade,” said Cabinet Secretary Lochhead. “American Scots act as wonderful ambassadors for our country, and I'm thrilled to be able to join so many of them to celebrate Alexandria's rich Scottish heritage.
Scotland is known the world over for our first class food and drink, and I look forward to meeting with businesses, members of the US House of Representatives and the Scottish Diaspora and others during my visit to both promote and honor an industry that all Scots globally can be very proud of."
As Grand Marshal, Lochhead will lead more than 120 Scottish Clans, pipe and drum bands, Scottish dancers, re-enactment groups, canine marchers, local dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus, through the streets of Old Town. The Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend launches Alexandria’s holiday season with events to celebrate and honor Alexandria’s Scottish founders.
“The Campagna Center is honored to welcome Cabinet Secretary Lochhead as the Grand Marshal of our 40th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade,” said Campagna Center President and CEO Karen Hughes. “The Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend celebrates Alexandria’s rich Scottish heritage, and we are very excited to have Cabinet Secretary Lochhead—an esteemed member of the Scottish Parliament—leading the parade. This is a wonderful way to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this celebrated community event.”
Born and raised in Paisley, Mr. Lochhead attended Glasgow College of Commerce, where he earned his HNC in Business Studies, and the University of Stirling where he graduated with a BA in Political Studies. In 1999 he was elected to the Scottish Parliament as a North East MSP. Mr. Lochhead served as SNP spokesman on Environment, Energy, Rural Affairs and Fishing, and in May 2007 he was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment.
Mr. Lochhead currently resides in Elgin with his wife and two sons. He enjoys reading history and fiction, cycling and cinema.
