Trunk or Treat! Jefferson Houston Elementary School Puts a Fresh Twist on Halloween Festivities

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Jefferson Houston Elementary School is offering local children a new, safer alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating. On Monday, October 29, 2007, Jefferson Houston PTA, in conjunction with Alexandria Yellow Cab and The Campagna Center, will transform the Jefferson Houston parking lot into Halloween central for the First Annual Trunk or Treat.

In this revised rendition of the age-old tradition, taxi-cab trunks replace front doorsteps and candy-collecting is confined to a single parking lot. This provides parents with a safe, family-friendly alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Children are invited to wear costumes or masks as they parade around the school parking lot, trunk-or-treating for goodies dispersed from the trunks of taxi cabs. In addition to Jefferson Houston students, children from Alexandria Head Start and Hopkins House are invited to participate.

“The Campagna Center is proud to partner with Jefferson Houston and Alexandria Yellow Cab to bring Trunk or Treat to the children and families of the Alexandria community,” said Karen Hughes, Campagna Center President and CEO. “Strategic partnerships like this are the cornerstone of The Campagna Center’s success, and we are thrilled to be part of this exciting community collaboration.”

Children will be invited to trunk-or-treat in one of three shifts. Accompanied by their parents, preschool students will begin at 6:45 pm, followed by grades kindergarten through second grade at 7:00. Students in grades three through five will trunk-or-treat at 7:15. Prior to trunk-or-treating, students will be invited to decorate a bag to hold their goodies.

“I cannot think of a better way to start giving back to the community than by serving our children and the public schools that they attend,” said Alexandria Yellow Cab Vice President Lewis Davis. “There is not an organization that does more in this service than The Campagna Center. It is a pleasure to follow their example.”

Trunk or Treat will take place immediately following the 6:15 pm Jefferson Houston PTA Dinner. The PTA meeting will be held from 7:30 – 8:00 pm. Childcare will be provided during the meeting.
