Debbie Cohen has over 35 years of broad experience in the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia in management, marketing, communications, finance, and personnel at for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and as an independent consultant and a real estate agent. She retired as Chief Development Officer of the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust (a $6 billion mutual fund for pension funds) in early 2019. During her 11-year tenure, she was responsible for long-term planning to develop new marketing opportunities, coordinating marketing, investor relations, and communications activities, and acting as a liaison with the multifamily investment, legal, and portfolio management groups.
Her other financial management roles have included Vice President positions at Fannie Mae (Portfolio Management, Portfolio Transactions, and Capital Markets) and Chief Operating Officer at the nonprofit Forest Stewardship Council. She has been involved in strategic planning as Senior Director of Planning and Research at the Office of Finance, Federal Home Loan Banks and as board liaison at the Forest Stewardship Council.
Wanting to give back to the community, Debbie has held various volunteer positions. At Shelter House, Inc., which manages homeless family and domestic violence shelters and programs, she served as President, Treasurer, Chair of the Personnel and Finance Committees, and Chair and member of the Advisory Board. Since her retirement, she volunteers at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the Lazarus Ministry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, VA, and at Conservation International in Arlington, VA.
Debbie holds a BS in Biological Sciences from Cornell University and an MBA from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
