Middle and High School: Building Better Futures

Building Better Futures takes a holistic approach to removing obstacles students face during middle and high school and prepares them for post-secondary success. We provide opportunities that allow students to explore their many interests and plan for future success in a supportive and welcoming environment.

 

High School

At the High School level, BBF offers college and career readiness opportunities that range in level of commitment. Programs available to all students include college tours, college essay support, and seminars.

Middle School

At the middle school level, we will offer enrichment programs at Francis C. Hammond and Jefferson-Houston. Programs of interest include Cosmetology and Art Exploration.

College Tours

We’ve partnered with the ACHS College and Career Center to sponsor their college tours, allowing us to work together to provide more tours at no cost to students. Students interested in these tours can learn more through the College and Career Center’s Canvas page.

Seminars

We offer seminars with volunteer speakers to all ACHS students. Topics include financial literacy, college applications, interview and cover letter workshops, college and career pathways in STEM or arts, and more.

Every fall, we host a college application support program in which students receive one-on-one help with their college essays on a walk-in basis. This takes place in the AHCS College and Career Center.

Workforce Experience

We also offer opportunities that require a higher level of commitment from the student. During Spring and Summer breaks, we partner with local Alexandria business to offer externships in various career tracks. We also employ high school students at Campagna after-school sites.

Middle School

BBF provides enriching experiences to our middle school sites with a focus on preparing for their future. Afterschool activities include cosmetology, guitar, soccer, and more. Seminars and college tours are also offered to middle school students.

We provide biweekly mental health sessions through our partnership with Alexandria Place Therapy, as well as small group mentoring sessions led by members of the ACHS JROTC team. These programs provide positive role models that help students work through the difficult parts of being in middle school.

Arts

We believe art has the ability to inspire students and bring them together. Both middle and high school students are offered arts enrichments in a variety of artistic disciplines. Every year, we produce a musical with our middle schoolers. At rehearsals, they receive voice, dance, and acting classes. Our high school students are offered weekly classes in dance and digital art, as well as an Improv club that puts on performances open to the community.

We offer these engaging after school enrichments as a way to foster community. The students are given a space to express themselves and explore their passions, which motivates them to plan for their future.
