For 80+ years, Campagna Center has changed lives in Alexandria, Virginia, by inspiring a commitment to learning and achievement among children, teens, and adults. We focus on families who are dealing with resource challenges because we believe the entire community benefits when an individual has the chance to achieve their highest potential.
Our programs serve children and families from cradle to career. Those programs include Early Head Start, Head Start, and an Early Learning Center, which provide high-quality childcare, educational programming, and other services for children and their families from infancy through pre-K. Wright to Read offers tutoring and mentoring for elementary age students who are reading at least one year below grade level and is staffed by caring volunteers. Campagna Kids is a before- and after-school program for elementary and middle school students that provides them with enriching experiences. Building Better Futures removes obstacles that high school students face and prepares them for post-secondary success, whether in college or careers. And New Neighbors, our program for adults, is also staffed by volunteers and provides English language courses and wraparound services for immigrants and refugees in our community.
All told, these holistic and interconnected programs serve around 2,000 people in Alexandria each year. The proceeds from the Taste of Scotland support this important work.
- The 2025 celebration was the 54th annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend.
- The Scottish Christmas Walk is one of only five state-wide events documented in the Library of Congress Bicentennial Local Legacies Project by U.S. Senator John. W. Warner.
- The parade was created to thank the City of Alexandria for its support of the Y.W.C.A. (one of Campagna’s former names; read more on our history page.)
- In 1986, the Walk’s bulletin spells out its celebratory purpose: “Our Scottish Christmas Walk is a gift from the members of the Alexandria Community Y to the City of Alexandria. It is our celebration of this special city. It is our celebration of caring and concern for our neighbors. It is a neighborhood celebration of programs which serve the needs of women and their families of Alexandria.”
- Before it was Scottish, it existed as a Christmas Walk dating back to the 60s.
- Early walks, including the 1969 Christmas Walk, had a Swedish element, a call back to Alexandria’s other sister city, Helsingborg, Sweden. In 1969, Swedish elements included the crowning of Lucia Queen of Light, as well as a display of ceramics from Sweden and a Christmas tree decorated with Swedish trimmings in the lobby of City Hall in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy.
- The first time the Walk took a Scottish theme was in 1970, but in 1971, the Y.W.C.A merged the event with the St. Andrew’s Society’s celebration, and it became a truly Scottish affair to honor the City of Alexandria’s Scottish heritage and namesake, Scottish merchant and ship owner, John Alexander.
- The second annual Scottish Christmas Walk in 1972 “netted $12,000 for the Y’s work in the community” according to a 1973 Alexandria Journal article.
- British Ambassadors were regularly connected to the festivities. In 1973, the British Ambassador Rowland Baring, the 3rd Earl of Cromer, and Lady Cromer sponsored the Walk, and in the 1980s, British Ambassador Sir Oliver and Lady Wright were involved.
- In 2007, organizers of the weekend advertised that 125 groups and 2,500 individuals participated in the event.

While these words are sometimes used interchangeably, they have different meanings. Whiskey typically refers to whiskies made in the United States or Ireland, while Whisky without an ‘e’ refers to spirits made in Canada, Japan, Scotland, England, and Wales.
The dress code for the evening is holiday cocktail. In celebration of our city’s Scottish history and Taste of Scotland tradition, plaid attire is highly encouraged!
We recommend using a rideshare, like Lyft or Uber, taxi, or public transportation to get to and from the Taste of Scotland, as the safest and easiest options.
Limited parking may be available at the venue.
Only Sponsorships include a waived fee to walk in the Scottish Christmas Walk parade as a unit. If you would like to make use of this benefit, please contact Campagna at developmentoffice@campagnacenter.org.
Host Tickets do not automatically include a waived fee to walk in the parade, but Campagna Center may open up spots to walk with our unit, pending availability.
If you would only like to walk in the parade, please contact and register with our partners, the City of Alexandria (more information coming soon).
It is free to attend the parade, and we are seeking volunteers to assist with the parade if you’d like to get in on the holiday fun (see more info below).
